Topsail Island, North Carolina has some of the state's most inviting shoreline for family friendly beach vacations. It hasn't always been that way, though. The island's nautical name traces all the way back to the exploits of pirates like Edward Thatch in the 17th century. Blackbeard's ship the Queen Anne's Revenge supposedly used the channel between the island and mainland to hide until merchant ships passed by. The ship's highest mast, or topsail, was the only part visible to the unfortunate sailors before they were attacked.

Treasure hunters searched the forests on Topsail island for buried treasure over the years. Now most visitors come to Surf City for vacation. It's not hard to see why. There are hundreds of vacation homes for couples and families groups looking for a getaway in a family-oriented beach community.

The island's three communities, North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach, all maintain a devotion to beautification and a respect for the natural environment while balancing the need for modern amenities. No trip to Topsail is complete without a visit to the Sea Turtle Hospital  where you can get up close and personal with threatened and endangered sea turtle patients who are on the mend. When you're ready for another flashback to that simpler time, consider rollerskating at the Topsail Beach Skating Rink, which still plays the same classic oldies it has for decades.
